WHO WE ARE

The Waubonsee Valley Music Teachers Association (WVMTA) is a local chapter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. The WVMTA is dedicated to the advancement of music education through an open exchange of ideas to enrich the love and understanding of music. Its objectives are to raise the standards of music instruction and to encourage independent music teachers in the Fox Valley area of Illinois. We welcome all music teachers from surrounding communities to attend our monthly meetings and programs, encourage their students to participate in the AiM (Achievement In Music) program, and have students be a part of several WVMTA events, master classes, and recitals held periodically throughout the year.

HOW TO JOIN

Waubonsee Valley Music Teachers Association is affiliated with the Illinois State Music Teachers Association (ISMTA) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the nation's oldest professional music organization. Teachers who wish to join the local association also become members of the state and national associations. Members of MTNA are entitled to many membership services, including a subscription to the award-winning magazine, American Music Teacher, insurance programs, professional publications, and workshops at the state and national level. Active Membership is available to any individual professionally engaged in a music activity. If you are interested in the opportunities available througarolinih WVMTA and are concerned about the welfare of music and music education in our society, you are invited to join. It is not necessary to have a music degree or be affiliated with a music school. Discounted MTNA memberships apply to full time college students and individuals over age 70. AIM INFO

OVERVIEW

The Achievement in Music program, also known as AIM, is an exciting and motivating curriculum designed to develop strong performance and technical skills in piano as well as a thorough understanding of music theory. It is through these acquired skills and increased musical knowledge that students are able to perform both with confidence and with a high level of musicianship. The AIM program continues to grow with almost 4,000 students across several states participating in the examinations each year.There are twelve levels in the Achievement in Music Syllabus, with each level containing theory, performance, and technical requirements that follow a logical progression of skills from early elementary through advanced levels. Students generally prepare one level each year and demonstrate their competency at annual AIM Examinations, which are conducted by experienced judges in a comfortable and non-competitive setting.Students in Level I take an exam which includes technique, sight reading and transposition, aural skills, and the performance of two memorized pieces. A written exam and the harmonization of melodies are added to the exams in Levels II through XII. The performance exam concentrates on technique (scales, chord progressions and inversions, and arpeggios) and the performance of pieces from a flexible repertoire list.Students who pass the exams receive a certificate, award pin and the written feedback from the judge. After successful participation the first time, the student also receives a medal with a ribbon on which to display the award pin from different exam levels when completed. As an incentive to continue participating in the exams, students passing Levels VIII and above will be awarded additional merit prizes.The non-competitive nature of this exam makes it a valuable performance experience. There is no first place rating and scores are not published. Friendly judges offer constructive criticism and encouragement in the rating sheets. Often students are more relaxed during the AIM exam than during a large recital because there are only two people in the room during the examthe student and the judge.Being involved in the AIM program of study is important because it gives the student attainable goals to work toward each year. The material gets progressively more difficult with each new level which gives the student a concrete tool with which to measure progress. These exams also equip the students who decide to make a career in music by providing a strong foundation for further study. Regardless of the career choice, performing and understanding music is a gift for a lifetime that benefits the individual and society.

AiM EXAMS

When & WhereTheory Exams are held in November and Performance Exams are held in March. Examinations are conducted at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL.FeesCurrently, the entry fee for each exam is $10.00. The students pay all fees to the teacher, who then writes one check to the Waubonsee Valley Music Teachers Association. All entry fees are non-refundable.WhatLevel 1A, 1B, 1C, and Level 2The AIM Syllabus at these levels is designed for early elementary or transfer piano students who are new to the AiM program. The curriculum for each level includes theory, technique, sight reading, and performance repertoire in one comprehensive examination. Examinations are held in a comfortable setting, and care is taken that students have a positive experience. Students and teachers receive written comments from an adjudicator. A merit pin and a certificate are awarded upon successful completion of a level.AIM Theory Examinations (Level 3 - 12)The AIM Syllabus includes a progressive theory curriculum designed for elementary through pre-collegiate students. Each level includes a curriculum for piano proficiency skills, aural skills, and music theory fundamentals. During the AIM Theory Examination, a student takes a series of three short tests, including piano proficiency skills, aural skills, and written theory knowledge. Students and teachers receive written comments from an adjudicator. A merit pin is awarded upon successful completion of a level.AIM Piano Performance Examinations (Level 3 - 12)The AIM Syllabus includes repertoire lists for elementary through pre-collegiate piano students. Each level also includes specific technique requirements. Prior to enrolling in the AIM Performance Examination, a student must successfully complete the corresponding level of the AIM Theory Examination. Students and teachers receive a written evaluation from an adjudicator. Students also receive a certificate of merit for successfully completing all of the AIM requirements in theory and performance for the level.

In 1986, joint ISMTA chapters established the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund in honor of the founding members of the original chapter, Helen Berkley of Winfield, IL and Verona Pendell of West Chicago, IL. The West Suburban, Naperville, Salt Creek and Waubonsee Valley Chapters of the ISMTA sponsor and participate in the Scholarship Fund's activities: Naperville, Salt Creek, Waubonsee Valley, and West Suburban.

The purpose of the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund is to encourage and promote the cause of good music. The Participating Chapters jointly sponsor an annual piano competition for school-aged students whose teachers are members of the participating chapters. The winners of each division are awarded cash prizes, may be invited to perform at a meeting of one of the chapters, and receive other honors and recognition.

INFO This year the Berkley-Pendell Competition will be held at the College of DuPage Arts Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The application deadline is Friday, March 18, 2011 (postmark). Competition hours will be during store hours 10:00-6:00. Teachers are encouraged to consider entering students in this wonderful opportunity provided by the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund.Teachers who plan to enroll students need to accumulate five points by the application deadline in order to fulfill their teacher eligibility. The points for this year are listed below:1. Board members within local associations, state, or national: 4 points No signature required if listed in the current directory2. Attend association monthly meeting in its entirety; business and program: 1 point Non board members must attend a minimum of two (2) monthly meetings (all 5 points may be earned in this manner). Signature of the membership chair is required.3. Act as a speaker at a monthly meeting: 3 points4. Act as a panel member at a montly meeting: 2 points5. Serve as chairperson for a chapter recital: 1 point No signature needed if listed in the current directory.6. Serve 3 or more hours at AIM examination as a judge, timer, office worker, etc: 1 point Signature of AIM Chair required.7. Attend a workshop offered by the joint area group or state or national: 1 point per day Signature of workshop chair required.
